The pattern

What they don't see is the cost

The endless second-guessing, the fear of making the wrong choice, the pressure to perform, and the feeling that no matter what you accomplish, it never quite feels like enough.

For some people, perfectionism shows up as overachievement. For others, it looks like procrastination, anxiety, self-criticism, people-pleasing, or obsessive thinking. Different symptoms. Same underlying pattern.

We help people understand that pattern — and change their relationship with it.

The work

What this work is — and isn't

This isn't about lowering your standards or talking you out of caring. Your conscientiousness is real, and for much of your life it has worked. The question we're interested in is more precise: where did the standard stop being yours and start running you, and what is it protecting you from feeling if you let it loosen?

Not a symptom to suppress — an adaptation that once made sense.

We approach perfectionism the way we approach most things here — not as a symptom to suppress, but as an adaptation that once made sense. Somewhere, holding yourself to an impossible bar kept you safe, or earned you something, or quieted a fear. We help you understand how that pattern formed, and how to loosen its grip without losing the drive and care that are genuinely part of who you are.

How we work

A pattern worth understanding

We don't approach perfectionism as a flaw to eliminate. We approach it as a pattern worth understanding. Together, we'll explore what happens underneath the pressure to get things right:

  • The anxiety that appears when mistakes feel dangerous.
  • The self-criticism that keeps raising the bar.
  • The fear that slowing down means falling behind.
  • The experiences that taught you achievement, control, or certainty were necessary for safety.

Our goal isn't to help you become less capable. It's to help you feel less trapped.

Where OCD fits

A note on OCD

Many of the people we work with carry OCD-like patterns alongside their perfectionism — intrusive thoughts, mental reviewing, reassurance-seeking, a need for things to feel just right. We address these as part of the larger picture of how your mind manages anxiety and uncertainty.

We want to be straightforward about scope: if you are seeking a structured exposure-based protocol (ERP) for diagnosed OCD as a primary treatment, that is a specific specialization, and we're glad to point you toward clinicians who offer it. What we do is depth-oriented therapy for high-functioning adults in whom perfectionism and OCD-spectrum tendencies are interwoven — where the goal is understanding and loosening the pattern, not running a manualized protocol. If you're not sure which you're looking for, a brief consultation will clarify it quickly.

Why private pay

Care guided by your needs, not a billing category

Therapy for perfectionism rarely fits neatly into a diagnosis or a six-session treatment plan. The work is often deeper than symptom reduction. It involves understanding long-standing patterns, relationships, beliefs about yourself, and the ways you've learned to navigate pressure, achievement, and uncertainty.

Because we're private pay, treatment isn't dictated by an insurance company. There are no required diagnoses, no session limits imposed from outside the therapy room, and no pressure to fit your experience into a billing category. Instead, we focus on what's actually happening in your life and what will help create meaningful change. For many of our clients, that freedom matters.
