Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions section for prospective clients at Althought Therapy. We understand that seeking counseling can feel like a big step, and it’s natural to have questions about the process, what to expect, and how therapy can support your personal growth and well-being. This page is designed to provide clear, helpful answers to common questions, so you can feel informed, comfortable, and confident as you take the first step toward therapy.
FAQs About Trauma Therapy
We don’t provide both couples therapy and individual therapy for one partner with the same therapist, as this can create overlapping roles and limit neutrality.
However, because Althought Therapy is a group practice, you have the option of working with one therapist for couples sessions and another for individual therapy. This allows each space to stay clear and protected while still supporting both your personal growth and your relationship.
Many clients begin with couples therapy and later transition into individual work (or vice versa) as part of a broader, continuous process of healing and connection.
Getting started is simple. Click “Book Now” to schedule a free 15-minute consultation or your first full session. After booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email and access to our secure client portal.
If you’re scheduling couples therapy, please include your partner’s name and email so we can set up their account as well. You’ll then complete brief intake forms — it only takes a few minutes — and we’ll be ready to begin.
Your first session is about getting to know you — your goals, challenges, and what’s bringing you to therapy now. The focus is on understanding you as a whole person, not as a set of symptoms. We get to the root cause. We’ll explore what you’ve already tried, what has or hasn’t worked, and what meaningful change might look like for you.
In the next sessions, we often begin to explore how early experiences and attachment patterns continue to shape how you think, feel, and relate — emotionally, cognitively, and relationally. From there, sessions unfold at a pace that balances exploration with integration, combining insight, emotional processing, and practical tools for change.
At Althought Therapy, we believe lasting transformation happens when awareness meets embodiment — when understanding deepens, self-compassion grows, and you begin to move through life with more intention, clarity, and authenticity.
We don’t treat therapy as symptom management — we approach it as transformation through understanding.
Our work integrates neuroscience, attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and psychodynamic insight within a deeply relational framework. We help you uncover how protective strategies that once kept you safe may now limit your growth — and how to re-engage those parts of yourself with compassion and agency.
You’ll gain both insight and tools: the “why” behind your patterns and the “how” of shifting them.
Therapy isn’t linear, but through curiosity and co-regulation, new patterns of safety, confidence, and self-trust begin to take root.
Many couples come to Althought Therapy after feeling stuck or unseen in prior therapy. Maybe you learned communication techniques but found they didn’t hold up under stress, or you felt the therapist was neutral to a fault — someone who managed conflict but never reached the deeper emotional layers underneath.
Our approach is different because it integrates clinical precision with relational depth. We combine evidence-based frameworks like the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) with attachment, psychodynamic, and nervous-system–informed approaches. This means we don’t just teach skills — we help you understand why certain patterns repeat, where they come from, and what needs they’re protecting.
We focus first on emotional safety and regulation, because without safety, communication tools rarely take root. You’ll learn to slow down conflict in real time, identify when your nervous systems are activated, and re-establish connection before trying to problem-solve.
Our work goes beyond surface repair — it’s about helping you and your partner see each other differently. We help you identify the underlying attachment longings beneath reactivity, move from blame to curiosity, and practice repair in ways that feel both genuine and sustainable.
At Althought Therapy, we hold space for three relationships in the room: you, your partner, and the partnership itself — an evolving system that deserves care and intentional tending. By exploring both the protective parts and the vulnerable truths each of you carry, we help you co-create a relationship grounded in empathy, respect, and emotional accountability.
Ultimately, what makes us different is that we’re not interested in quick fixes or scripts that fade after a few weeks — we’re here to help you build emotional fluency, mutual trust, and enduring connection that lasts well beyond therapy.
Yes. We offer in-person sessions at our Lakewood, Colorado office and secure virtual sessions throughout the state. Many clients — especially busy professionals or parents — choose a hybrid model, meeting in person when possible and virtually for convenience or travel.
Both formats provide the same level of presence, depth, and connection.
Books can bring insight — but insight alone doesn’t always create change. Therapy provides a real-time, co-regulated space to translate knowledge into new patterns of behavior and emotional experience.
Together, we’ll work through what keeps you stuck between knowing and doing — integrating understanding with the nervous system’s capacity to feel safe enough to change.
Therapy turns insight into integration.
Yes. We have a welcoming waiting area with Wi-Fi where older children can stay during your session. Younger children are also welcome to join when that feels appropriate — especially for parenting or postpartum-focused work.
We aim to make therapy accessible, flexible, and family-conscious, without judgment.
Althought Therapy is an out-of-network provider, meaning we do not bill insurance directly. Many clients prefer private pay to maintain privacy, flexibility, and full choice in their care.
We’re happy to provide a Superbill — a detailed receipt you can submit to your insurance company for potential partial reimbursement. HSA and FSA accounts may also be used for therapy services.
Most clients begin with weekly sessions, as consistency helps build momentum and supports meaningful progress. Over time, sessions may shift to every other week or monthly, depending on your goals, availability, and where you are in the therapeutic process. During our work together, we’ll regularly review what’s most supportive for your growth and adjust as needed.
Therapy sessions at Althought Therapy are self-pay. Sessions with Dr. Samantha Awalt, the founder and owner, are $240 per 50 minutes, while sessions with our associate clinicians are $160-200 per 50 minutes.
We offer flexible scheduling and the option for virtual or hybrid sessions to best fit your needs. A limited number of sliding-scale openings may be available based on financial need and clinician availability. If cost is a concern, we encourage you to reach out—together we can explore options that make therapy accessible and sustainable for you.
Yes. Everything shared in therapy is strictly confidential and protected by law. Confidentiality allows you to speak freely and honestly, knowing your privacy and dignity are respected.
There are only a few legal exceptions where information may be shared to ensure safety, including:
- Serious or imminent risk of harm to yourself or others
- Suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or vulnerable adult
- A valid court order requiring disclosure
Outside of these rare circumstances, what you share stays between you and your therapist.
At Althought Therapy, we take your trust seriously and are committed to maintaining a space that feels safe, grounded, and nonjudgmental.
